Just minutes before boarding and bidding farewell to Lisbon, travellers pause to take in the treetops along the city’s main avenue. This brief, final stroll down Avenida da Liberdade is offered by Portugal Duty Free, which has invested over €34 million in the refurbishment of dozens of stores across national airports, including €1 million in an extensive network of digital screens that extend the traveller’s journey through the city.
Cork, Portuguese tiles, and the iconic Tram 28 help shape the design of Portugal Duty Free’s flagship store in Lisbon, a project born from a joint venture between ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal and Ireland’s Aer Rianta International (ARI), established in June 2022.
According to Alain Brun, CEO of Portugal Duty Free, the project was conceived to offer those in transit a true journey through “portugalidade”, the essence of Portugal. “It’s important that passengers can truly enjoy their journey, even inside the airport,” he explains.
