Portugal Duty Free revamps store concept across national airports

Portugal Duty Free, owned by ARI and ANA|VINCI Airports and responsible for managing over 30 stores across national airports, has unveiled a new store concept that sets a new standard of excellence in travel retail.

The goal of this extensive renovation, involving a major investment across more than 10,000 m² of retail space, was to capture the essence of Portugalidade: from Portugal’s iconic landscapes to its art and heritage, and the world-renowned flavours and aromas of its gastronomy. The result is a memorable travel retail experience for every passenger.

Each location now reflects its own unique identity, allowing passengers at Lisbon Duty Free, Porto Duty Free, Faro Duty Free, Madeira Duty Free, and Azores Duty Free to experience the energy and traditions of each region within the airport.

Portugal Duty Free now offers over 1,000 local products, many of them exclusive to the brand. The “Sabores de Portugal” concept celebrates the best of Portuguese cuisine, including the iconic Pastéis de Nata, freshly delivered to the airport every day.

The Port Cellar space presents the country’s finest Port wine collection, with more than 230 references. On the international front, Portugal Duty Free has enriched its portfolio with leading beauty brands such as Charlotte Tilbury, Le Labo, Sol de Janeiro, and Creed.

Sustainability was a key pillar in the redesign. Every aspect, from store design and construction to the product range, reflects the ESG commitments of ARI and ANA|VINCI Airports.

A dedicated Sustainability Area has been created at Lisbon Duty Free, featuring over 100 eco-friendly products for conscious consumers, ranging from water bottles and stationery to souvenirs and gifts. The new Portugal Duty Free stores deliver a truly unique travel retail experience.

Digital innovation was also central to the upgrade. The sense of place is enhanced through digital entrances featuring LED wall panels displaying stunning imagery of local landscapes and landmarks. Across the stores, more than 2,000 LED panels and 450 LCD screens have been installed, offering an immersive, sensory experience. Self-checkout counters and over 40 mobile payment units ensure a faster, more convenient shopping journey.

“The experience at Portugal Duty Free is truly unique,” says Alain Brun, CEO of Portugal Duty Free.

“Today we deliver an unmatched travel retail experience in each of our stores, elevating the sense of place to new heights. The Portuguese have a wonderful sense of pride, and we’ve captured that in all our stores through a modern airport shopping experience that celebrates both culture and heritage. None of this would have been possible without our teams, whose commitment to excellence and to exceeding customer expectations continues to inspire us.”

Thierry Ligonnière, CEO of ANA|VINCI Airports, added: “Completing the renovations of the Portugal Duty Free stores marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving the passenger experience. ARI has done an outstanding job, these newly designed spaces offer a diverse retail selection, delivering a seamless shopping experience that enhances every journey.

As part of ANA|VINCI Airports’ broader investment in modernising airport infrastructure across Portugal, this transformation reflects our dedication to creating high-quality environments while supporting the economic development of the regions where we operate.

We are proud to welcome passengers to these exceptional new spaces.

Ray Hernan, CEO of ARI, concluded: “We are incredibly proud to unveil the new Portugal Duty Free stores, which we believe have set a new benchmark for exceptional travel retail experiences. We have demonstrated ARI’s commitment to turning concepts into reality, the designs, renders, and plans presented in our original proposal to ANA/VINCI Airports have now been brought to life for passengers.
Collaborative partnerships are the foundation of our business, and we have great ambitions to continue expanding our operations in Portugal alongside our partners at ANA|VINCI Airports.”
